TINNE young museum klausen children’s museum will be built on the grounds of the former Capuchin monastery in Klausen and will be the nucleus and point of departure for an art, culture and educational ensemble for children, young people, adults and families. The project has been developed in several phases from 2010 to 2021. In order to realise the project, in 2022 the Tinne Foundation for Art, Culture and Education, South Tyrol announced an interdisciplinary design competition for artist collectives with architectural expertise and arts-related architecture collectives. The team APIÙM2A submitted the winning project.
Offer to gift artworks
In 2010, the Dr. Hans und Hildegard Koester Foundation set the ball rolling for the museum project. The foundation offered Klausen, where artist Alexander Koester lived from 1886 to 1915, 130 of his paintings, oil sketches, pastels and drawings as a permanent loan. In return, Klausen was requested to create a professional framework to present the oeuvre of the “duck painter” and conduct research on it.

The team of curators – Petra Paolazzi, Marion Piffer Damiani und Carl Kraus – elaborated the content, goals and location of the planned museum in several steps on behalf of the Municipality of Klausen, headed by Mayor Maria Gasser (term in office: 2010–2020). From 2013, working together with other experts, they examined the potential that a museum project offers for Klausen, while also involving local citizens through two participation processes. In addition, they drew on Klausen’s history as an artists’ colony (1874-1914) and transposed this into the present. The aim is to create a place that is responsibly projected into the future. The concept with the duck: TINNE young museum klausen
The curators’ work resulted in a museum concept for visitors aged 4 to 104, TINNE young museum klausen. On the grounds of the former Capuchin monastery, it will combine permanent and special exhibitions, art and creative workshops, a playground, and much more. The curators chose the duck as the leitmotif of the art, culture and education centre for children, young people, adults and families. The famous “leading lady” in Alexander Koester’s paintings stands for diversity, ecology and sustainability in TINNE young museum klausen. The duck is relatable, brings good luck and is at ease in every context – ducks move elegantly, freely and unencumbered through the water and the air, as well as waddling with great charm on land.
Interdisciplinary design competition for artist collectives with architectural expertise and arts-related architecture collectives
In order to implement the TINNE young museum klausen project, in 2022 the Tinne Foundation for Art, Culture and Education, South Tyrol announced an interdisciplinary design competition for artist collectives with architectural expertise and arts-related architecture collectives. The winning project was presented on 24 February 2023: Under the leadership of the architecture studio AMAA in Venice, South Tyrolean architects, artists and designers collaborated on the winning design, a parcour with a museum, arena, café and playground that is attuned to the city and the ensemble.
Optimised winning project
In a workshop with associations and political representatives of the municipality of Klausen in April 2023, the technical and practical requirements for the new cultural area were gathered. The wishes and expectations of future users were subsequently integrated into the project by the planning team and presented to the interest groups in October 2023. In this way, the winning APIÙM2A team optimised its design for Klausen, as was also stipulated in the competition guidelines. In the meantime and irrespective of this, the City Commission and the City Council of Klausen adopted a generally negative position on the project in passing a resolution and gave a negative response to the respective objection (Einspruch gegen den Beschluss des Gemeinderates) by the TINNE Foundation. Following the presentation of the optimised winning project, the mayor Peter Gasser stated, according to a press article, that the project called TINNE young museum klausen will not be pursued further by the City commission.
